Hello my fellow GLEE watchers. Well, from the sound of this week’s episode soundtrack and the title of this week’s show, it looks like we all need to remember to bring a box of tissues with us wherever and whenever we watch GLEE this time around. The episode is called “The Break Up”. Oh man, this is going to be a tear jerker. I’m putting betting money on that right now. From the sounds of it, none of our favorite couples are safe, but who knows who will make it out of this still together. Well, I guess the writers and the actors know. The music is melancholy, but it also gives us some beautiful, emotional, stripped vocal performances. So here’s the proof that Thursday night is going to be a rough one, even if it is melodic.
Remember Duncan Sheik’s song “Barely Breathing”? It’s been awhile since I’ve heard it, but it’s the first song and Blaine and Finn take it on as duet. The boy’s voices sound great together and the song has a simple clear message that fits the episode’s theme. Plus, it’s nice to hear Finn’s voice again. It’s been a long time.
Rachel and Brody sing “Give Your Heart A Break” to each other. Yes, I’m talking about Demi Lovato’s tune. This rendition is beautiful and the harmonies build in emotion as the song goes on. Propelling us toward whatever the episode has in store for us.
Then the magic really happens when Blaine sings Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” once again. It was the song that he was singing the first time he met Kurt. That time it was a fast paced a cappella number, but his time it’s not a happy, upbeat version. It’s a raw, stripped vocal by Blaine, surrounded by a simple, acoustic piano instrumental. It’s my favorite out of the 6 tracks this week!
Two of our favorite couples, Rachel and Finn/Kurt and Blaine bust out No Doubt’s classic hit “Don’t Speak”. It’s not my favorite start to a song. For some reason having Finn and Blaine start it out doesn’t work for me. But once all of the harmonies and group singing starts, it pulls me right in. They all sound wonderful together, which makes up for semi weak start.
The lone solo tune of the night is brought to us by Santana as she croons her way through Taylor Swift’s “Mine”. It comes off super sweet and you rarely get to see or hear this side of Santana. It’s nice to see her in this light every once in awhile. It gives you that little “awwww” moment.
And to end it all (though we don’t know which end yet) we have a group duet brought to us by every single couple on GLEE. Mr. Schue, Emma, Finn, Rachel, Blaine, Kurt, Santana and Brittany all pull on our heart strings with Coldplay’s “The Scientist”. I don’t think there is a more perfectly emotional song for this ending. The GLEE team was smart for putting this one at the end.
So let’s all nervously wait a few more days to see where our favorite couples end up…
